Summer is annoying AF.

I’ve read some seriously fucked up dark romance with bad bad black flag guys, and this is the first time a character’s dark appetites gave me the full on ick. I couldn’t even appreciate from a distance. And I think it’s because of who I am supposed to believe Savannah is a person. I am supposed to believe that just because she decided to trust King that leaves her free to get off in a gross setting. Nope.

Look, I knew in chapter 1 that this book is going to be the 5-star installment I’ve been pining for. Aon has somehow become even darker and alluring, and Lydia finally realized her power. It’s going to be an epic story.

Ok 3 stars! She has got SO MUCH REASON to shout this arrogant mofo down, but instead she is feeling SORRY for escaping her kidnapper? Look, you can still have your big sex moment, but it would be so much better with a all-out, drag down fight where she gives him hell and he finally tells her how all his grandstanding is BS.

So far, premise-building is excellent. I am cautiously optimistic about this one :)

We are at the moment where the FMC makes a colossally dumb choice. Had to happen, I guess.

So far 3 stars. 3 days of sleeping with the guy with absolutely zero trust-building opportunities, and she is asking: “wouldn’t he have told me if he had a gun? Maybe he doesn’t trust me…”. Honey.

Ok, plot and romantic conflict have scraped back a 4th star for this book.

It annoys me that the women in these books never SPEAK.

Oh come on. She is mystified when he gives her the space and distance she said she needs? She is annoyed that she is the one who has to decide she wants him? This is what she asked for. And yet, through narration the author tells us it’s only hers because of misogyny. Come on.

This book has moments in plot and in the romance arc that are redeeming, but mostly it is way to easy to think of Apollo as a attempted redo of Frey, and while he is an improved version of Frey, it is kind of — boring. Because no one has really had to work for anything, and the main characters don’t really have unique personalities.

This book was going so well until it went totally tits up at the inn. Apollo didn’t even have to earn Ilsa’s attentions. We just leave it aaaalllll up to magic adella tea, and now it’s all flowers and talking bunnies and everyone just looooves each other no problems to speak of. What a miss! I was so looking forward to some power play.

DNF at 54%. Look, if you love ACOTAR, you will like this book. It’s a love triangle, complete with a misunderstood shadow daddy and a survivor FMC. It has some spicy scenes and interesting plot. I’m putting it down because I really don’t like love triangles, the conflict and trauma is too new adult for my tastes, and the syntax that the author uses is confusing — I had to re-read passages several times.

I DNF’ed. I just couldn’t get into it, which was so sad. Seems like a really distant HR.
