“I HATE YOU, INEVITABLE HORRIBLE!” is what I think some of the kids sometimes call “a whole mood.”

The antagonist (? adversary? I dunno, the Bad Thing) of this book is increasingly disease-y. It is too timely and damn but Jemisin can write stuff that's painful but compelling AF.

“Don’t sleep on the city that never sleeps, son, and don’t fucking bring your squamous eldritch bullshit here.”

An unseen horror is attacking NYC and our narrator is fighting back with the city itself as a newborn living weapon and it is AWESOME. (“And just to add insult to injury? I backhand its ass with Hoboken... Port Authority makes it honorary New York, motherfucker; you just got Jerseyed.”)

It’s heavy-handed but so cute! Which means I have no idea at all if kiddo will like it.

Intro to chapter books quest: still going.

It was on a sale shelf for $6 and the illustrations are beautiful in a very Dave McKean kind of way and I mean that as a good thing.

The run of jokes about Poe Dameron’s pretty, pretty hair is pretty stupid but I’m enjoying it.

I am forcing myself to stop reading now because the action is rising and rising and rising and...

This book is so gripping. I sat down with it around 9 this morning and it is now almost 11, and sure, I reread faster than I read, but still. It's been awhile since I read so much in almost one sitting. I've gotten up and had breakfast and tea and stuff, but mostly I've just been reading.

"...would I have gone into that ship and risked everything if I had known what was about to happen? After a moment of thought, I knew I would have. I'd gone in there with the intent to live, but sure that I was going to die."

Shades of Octavia Butler in the best way.

Oh dear. On the one hand, I know this particular rabbit hole is finite, but it's got those "see this series over here” notes I have such trouble resisting... Maybe I'll draw myself a diagram. A thread to follow back out of the labyrinth, despite how cute that is given villains in earlier/ongoing reads.

Massive effing spoilers if you've been under a rock for quite some time, but also this made me cry so I'm getting it out of my system a bit:

And now I'm crying again. Time to get me some Squirrel Girl unicorn chaser, I think. Her crossover with Laura Kinney and Gabby was a g-d delight.

I gave in and got a Marvel Unlimited account, party people. Now I am reading all the comics and not sure how to tally them on Goodreads but dude. So many comics. Yay!
