I’m finding Maddow’s writing style in this book different to her previous books; it seems be written like a broadcast or podcast script, with use of more casual diction and even contemporary slang than I remember from reading Drift.

What the f&¢k is this?

«"Hello, viewers," Elizabeth said. "And welcome back. See this?" She held a soup can close to the camera. "It's a real time-saver."

That's because it's full of chemicals," she said, tossing it with a clunk into a nearby garbage can.»

Am I supposed to believe a PhD-level chemist said convenience food is bad because it’s full of CHEMICALS?!? All food is full of chemicals.

I’m enjoying this story but the author’s casual anti-fat bias is annoying, even distracting. So far, I’ve only noticed descriptions of a fat character’s body size when they are identified as villainous or otherwise unpleasant people.

This book is so damn good. I hope it will be as widely read as it deserves to be.

This is a fantastic book. Brilliant integration and synthesis of so much historical, archival, and personal information.
