Lapham writing in Feb 2001 on the Bush-Gore voting count debacle in Florida : "why were [Republicans] always enraged? They controlled almost all of the political machinery in Florida [...] and yet they imagined themselves unfairly persecuted by a jealous god and wicked trolls. What was it to which they believed themselves entitled, and how did they arrive at the certain knowledge of their own certain virtue?"

Kind of boring so far, I find the plot a little random. But I'll keep going and see if it gets better.
