Tina D is starting The Comforters
Just beginning Spark’s first book on a sofa Saturday afternoon. Bliss. Cracking characters. One has just said, on identifying her current situation as lacklustre: “For one who demands much of life, there is always a certain amount of experience to be discarded as soon as one discovers its fruitlessness.” Love it.

Oh god. I’m not doing well at picking books this year. A large part of this is written from the perspective of young children. I wish someone had mentioned this in a review, it’s boring me senseless. Also I hadn’t realised it was written relatively recently although set in the 1930s , it’s an odd mix of modern values applied on top of a historic situation. Not sure I’m going to finish it.

Giving up. Not enjoying it. Can’t bear to see her unravel herself. Sure it’s amazing but it’s not for me, not this time at least.

This is 4 books in one : the brilliantly titled The unpleasantness at the belladonna club, strong poison, five red herrings and the last is called have his carcase. Strong poison introduces Harriet Vane, Wimsey’s in love but she’s done with love, likes being independent. She appears later in Have His Carcase. Five red herrings is set in Scotland catching trains to St Enoch’s square etc lovely details.

Listening to this on the 508 bus from Windermere to Penrith. A perfect pairing.
