IT'S AMAZING! CANNOT PUT IT DOWN!!!

There goes my weekend. Can't put this one down.

Ugh. This is so, so sad. I'm grossed out by the mother, but I can't be too judgmental: motherhood makes you do and think and say crazy things.

So I'm like 99.9999% sure I've figured out what the Big Reveal will be.

So far, I'm having a hard time getting into it. It feels like it's a mix of speculative fiction and hard scifi. I don't usually care for hard scifi... maybe that's the problem?

The characters feel wooden and flat. And they're making choices that don't feel like choices humans would make: which makes me wonder if I just don't get it because I'm missing relevant cultural context...?

So... Darrow is a Gary Stu. This book has zero narrative tension because 1) Darrow never, ever fails at anything he tries and 2) it's tacking closely to a generic Hero's Journey arc. I'm not compelled to keep reading because it's fairly obvious that Darrow will succeed without too much trouble.

So... it's really hot and women get abused while men make all the decisions. Also: would you like some more passages about the windup girl's skin and breasts? It's like... manic pixie dreamgirl but... oppressed genetic pixie dreamgirl?

I can't put the damn thing down.

For someone who is like 300 years old, Addie is... dull. Lacking cynicism and so self-centered.

It's soooo dated but sooooooooooo good. My favorite kind of world building, soft scifi.

It's been a few years since I read King, and he's as delightful as I remember. Started with "The Juant," and it was perfect King. I gasped as soon as I realized the implications of the Juant machines, and knew exactly what was going to happen to one of those kids.

I want to like this... but it feels so oppressive to read. I definitely want to see the Christopher Nolan version of it, though, whenever it becomes a movie.

I'm super confused, but I don't want to make this the second book I quit. It's only February. But what is going on? So far, I think this book would have benefited from an info-dump in chapter 1.

Why am I still reading it? "The Stand" is so much better. Why does everyone on Goodreads like this book? What am I missing here?

It's kind of like watching a trashy reality show. And I find it unbelievable that Rachel NEVER googled Nick to learn more about him... what?
