This book is….fantastic. Main character is Malaya, a young black girl growing up in Harlem. This is a story about how women’s weight is an everyday concern, how absolutely consuming it really is on families. How they all use food as a way to communicate difficult things, how Nyela and Ma’Mere both are utterly consumed by how “big” they are perceived and how that has directly affected Malaya her entire life

“And in one of the pamphlets, they describe how they cremate dead babies in these little individual 'metal pans. That's what they call them—metal pans. I can't stop thinking about that. 'Pans.' It's so gross. Like they're making personal pan pizzas. Isn't that just awful? Doesn't that make you sick?" Lol

This book is addicting

I find myself having to refer back to the family tree often, that goes to say what a good idea to put the family tree at the start of the book because this has so many layers

I just think the relationship between Om and Greta is so fucking funny. I constantly find myself laughing out loud on Greta’s interpretations of what Om is writing and/ or thinking about during the therapy sessions. Pg. 284 “Om opened a notebook and began scribbling... Shebiscuit. Blinders. Ketamine. my little pussy/pony. Sarah Jessica Parker” “she imagined him drawing 8======D”
