I didn't care for Fromm but Chomsky got it right "pretty superficial." I don't understand how anyone mentions this guy as a reference. there is no there there.

Wills of the Rich and Famous
Just finished the "blondes." The most intersting thing was Harlow's 3 marriages by the time she died where she was engaged to Wm Powell. He provided also for a $540,649.64 (in 2022 monies) marble laid crypt.

Three out of 5 of the shorts were made into movies. I've seen two so it was good to see what they were based on. The third I think after this I will check out.

Studies on the Civilization of Islam (Princeton Legacy Library)
The chapters are very uneven. The one on Saladin terrific...the one on Arab-Byzantine relationships was ok and not very convincing. Chapter 3, The Armies of Saladin nice historical note. The Evolution of Govt dull...and so it goes.

The Middle East and the West (Goldbacks)
Lewis said a book of his was translated into Hebrew and published by the Israeli defense ministry. It was also translated into Arabic & published by the Muslim Brotherhood.
In his preface to the Arabic version, the translator said, “I don’t know this author but one thing about him is clear: He is either a candid friend or an honorable enemy, in either case is one who has disdained to falsify the truth.”

Unfortunately there was no more for the preview before publication which is supposedly sometime in May. What I read was interesting and countered much of the news I read/heard previously.

HIs loyalty to American workers makes him blind to many of its failings. Nonetheless he documents his perceptions well so you can catch the logic errors.

It's effect on Zain is profound. Lots of good ideas and astrological concepts but not all of them work -- having tried and tested them.

Green Darkness
A thinly disguised story of the author's oedipal desires for her father. I can understand why when I first read it as a teenager, I liked it because I was clueless. Now? Unfinishable.

Campbell is not a good writer, that's a problem, a big problem in this book. He's long winded and where 1 would do he takes 10 == sort of like the Dickens of non-fiction. he claims he went to Alamut in 1966 but no proof. That's suspicious to me in book like this..........and so I plough on.

The Assassins of Alamut
The quote by Rashid ad-Din Sinan, a Nizari chief, wrote, Were it not for our passionate attachment to material things, there would God and nothing but God..the author writes this means because of ignorance of our own true nature we do not see God but his caveat that it is not the same as being attached to material things that blinds is odd.

Killing the Mob: The Fight Against Organized Crime in America
I have never read another of BORs Killing series so I do not know if this is typical, but so far seems just a rehash of movies and magazine clippings. His love of Hoover and the G-men distorts this book and he relies on hearsay too much.

No Good Men Among the Living: America, the Taliban, and the War through Afghan Eyes
Kinda disjointed story.
Even with Uruzgan elders clamoring for American support, however, Karzai had an obvious image problem on his hands. Every Afghan leader since the 1970s had lived and died with foreign backing, and many of them had plotted their coups and revolutions from Pakistan. How was he any different? His plan needed a nationalist gloss, a way to maintain the fiction of a homegrown uprising

Has it really been 7 years since I read this? Amazing since I don't remember a thing...zero, nothing, and that never happens to me. I guess that says a lot...its not a memorable tale. Tallly Ho.

Liberty Versus the Tyranny of Socialism: Controversial Essays
When the World Trade Towers were being built, asbestos was outlawed and so the architects found a substandard sub. When it collapsed, NIST (National Inst of Standards) said, that would not have happened with asbestos.

The bible as good reading
First it's not 93 pages but 104, I guess someone should update that. It's a fast read as Beveridge pulls out alll the highlights but neglects my favorite Jonah -- I found that strange. At least he did mention my other, Gideon, but barely Samson. Odd choices he made upon reflection -- no walls of Jericho, just a line for Deborah, and the Ark? Zip. OTOH Moses, Abraham and Joseph are stars, particularly Moses.
