My review of Harry Whitewolf's Road to Purification saw a sudden spike of likes today. Don't like. Read! Road is a great book that restored my faith in Beatnik lit. I still think about it months after reading. I mean to get to Harry's Argentina novel too, when I can.

I'm off to France for ten days. I expect you Goodreaders to behave while I'm gone. C'est trop pour moi.

Goodreads is now telling me that I because I read Dog! by Mike Robbins that maybe I'd be interested in a similar book - Selected Writings in Sociology and Social Philosophy by Karl Marx.

Two things I've learned about Mike from this book: He's got a deep voice and a hot temper. You'd never know the latter from the cool pacing of his prose.

Sixty-nine percent done. I hope Mad Harry makes it with a chick before this story's done. Maybe in Dahab?

I feel sad every time a country is left behind. But then the new one proves interesting too.

Forty-one percent done. This is better than any Beat book I've ever read. I can't wait to explain in my review. In the meantime, Mad Harry scores more hash.

Twenty percent done. Mad Harry has visited the pyramids and despite being surrounded by annoying people, no-one got hurt.

I've encountered the Quechua language for the first time outside linguistics books.

Before that, tales of getting drunk in Sudan. I've actually had Ethiopian tej before. It was nice.

Mad Harry's no pushover. He's a man's man in poet's clothing. Refreshing!

On being alone in a Sudanese wasteland: "It was peaceful, as it must be for a chicken when it is finally in the oven."

Going to read this simultaneously with Road to Purification. I need more eyes and ears.

Ten percent done. This book, plus the fact that I'll soon be visiting France for the first time, has reawakened my wanderlust.

Four percent done. A straight narrative! The Good Harry already delivers!

90% done, and this has gotten gritty. At the same time, I see the verb "copulate" for only the second time in print (the first was in some poem by Jim Morrison).

68% done. An unusual book. A jumble of pleasant impressions. How will I sort them out?

44% done. I've been thinking from the first that this novel reads a lot like a play. And now it's become one!

30% finished. This is a strangely pleasant world.

Six percent done. Nice easy intro. Characters quickly created. Cool :-)

70% done with this, an unexpected Novel of Ideas.

50% done. It's not every day you see a reference to the Boer War in fiction. It's the little things that make one happy :-)

40% done, and wondering if Tschering is the breakout star here? He's got the best lines and funniest maneuvers.

For the first time in a week, my temperature's back to normal. I've really slacked off in my reading. When you've got the flu, the only thing your brain can handle are cop show reruns.

25% done. I'm shocked the Dog isn't fixed. What is this? Serbia?

I just read the first page and I already know I'm going to like this. The Dog's voice is here to stay.

Frank Zappa never said, "So many books, so little time." He didn't dismiss reading. But it wasn't for him. He equated reading with standing in line at French customs. So please ... just stop it!
