Here's my thing: for some reason, I have a hard time seeing the protagonist as a woman, since I don't even see her as a person. The author had a pretty weak attempt at filling out her person, well, at least to this point.
It seems as if we're missing parts of the story. We go back into the protagonists mind as she explains certain details that the reader needs to go forward, which subtracts from the obvious drama.
