Rev. Mapple’s sermon on Jonah is funny. He’s so dramatic. There were some embellishments and liberties taken to make the story fit relatable to this whaling community, and when the sermon was over “he said no more, but slowly, waving a benediction, covered his face with his hands, and so remained, kneeling, until all the people had departed and he was left alone in the place.” Reverse Irish goodbye?

So far.. not great. The establishment of the characters in the beginning was fine and held much potential, but the plot progresses at such a rapid pace that the characters who gave little indication of their religion suddenly become puritans and also fifty years old. Given I have not finished the book, this could change. I don’t feel like I’ve been given enough to care about the characters or setting.
