This book on a personal level is giving me a clear understanding of the tensions in the pre-war period in Poland and Germany in the 1930s.

Yesterday, the haughty graybeard claimed my men would yield to a bribe from the Christ's disciples. But here, a day later, it was he who was handing out the bribe money.

Chretien kept Canada out of a complicated, bloody, costly and protracted war in Iraq that, 15 years later, has few defenders. He followed his instincts, confounded the experts, and saved Canadian lives. He put Canada on the right side of history, which is the ultimate test of any prime minister.

I am thoroughly enjoying this book with its heroes and scoundrels. A love of the land shines through.
