“Baseball makes me happy. But I also like how happy it makes other people…I like how excited [the fans] are to be there. Not necessarily to see me, but to see the team, the game, the whole atmosphere. It’s like…my form of art? I can’t paint or design or write songs, but I can offer someone a slice of happiness by throwing the ball well for nine innings.”

“It’s not like any of us ever gets to a place where we’ve solved everything forever and we never have another problem. That’s now how life works. But that’s not what a happily ever after is, anyway.”

“Humanity at its worst is an easy story to tell—but it’s not the only story. Because the more we can imagine our better selves, the more we can become them.”

“I had a theory that we gravitate toward the stories we need in life. Whatever we’re longing for—adventure, excitement, emotion, connection—we turn to stories that help us find it. Whatever questions we’re struggling with—sometimes questions so deep, we don’t even really know we’re asking them—we look for answers in stories.”

That…was an incredibly awkward sex scene, and I do not like the idea of someone saying “Quinny baby” in that context.

If you’ll let me be nerdy about it for a moment, since the records are all available…in the 4 years I lived there, there were 3 tornado warnings and 0 tornados in the immediate area. So why the heck are there so many tornadoes happening in one month in this book?!

They’ve mentioned several times that they’re in the Orlando area, and they just went to the town I lived in for 3 of my 4 years there, which made me realize—I think they’ve had 3 tornadoes so far, but I don’t recall a single tornado warning the entire time I lived there. I remember wondering what we’d do when we lived in an apartment, but never had to figure that out.
