I remember reading Holly Black’s first book, Tithe, when it first came out like 20 years ago, and I remember liking it, but not loving it. I’m guessing her writing has grown up a bit since then though, so here we go!

This book is full of weird little vignettes or maybe drabbles? They’re kind of like a collection of short stories like her other books, but a little less world-within-a-world-within-a-world.

Three books down! It wants to be Game of Thrones but the author doesn’t seem to have the talent. Only one more to go! *sob* ☠️☠️☠️

The second book is a lot better than the first one so far, it’s slightly less sloggy and slow, and I’m a little more invested in the characters. I love the idea behind it but it’s just not executed well. Oooon we go.

This book is so boring. I’ve read a few other books in between chapter slogs of this and I haven’t even finished the first book of it yet. Hell, I JUST got out of the first damn day of the story. This may go on my DNF shelf. Ughhhhhhhhhh.

Another almost 20% and still it seems like noooooothing has haaaappened. I mean they’ve met people and things but it feels like nothing is happening. I do enjoy the ‘myth’ versions of some of the story parts though, it’s an interesting writing device. Does not stop the rest of this book from being a slog though.

I am reeaaaally struggling with this book. It’s not BAD, but it’s like someone trying to write Lord of the Rings as told to them by someone who’s a super fan. Like it’s not WRONG, it’s just not right.

I love Nesryn, and I love her as a rukrider, and I even love her with Sartaq. The Chaol chapters leave me underwhelmed.

Kaltain’s death gets me every time. I wish she could have been saved.
