Data science is used by powerful institutions (elite universities, corporations, government) run by wealthy white men. These institutions have the goal of using data science for profit, surveillance of minoritized people, and bureaucratic efficiency. Focusing on these goals leads to a significant oversight in areas that could otherwise be helpful for our society (eg femicide, Black women dying in childbirth).
