I don't care about Rillibee much but I'm interested in hearing about these ruins. Looks like the horses are getting eviller - I hope they pull off something truly diabolical by the end of this book. (I can see them twirling their horse moustaches.)

Slow going at first, but I can feel myself becoming involved. Also I always knew horses were evil. Alien horses? Even worse.

Reminds me of Le Guin a bit. I'm enjoying so far - have a soft spot for anthropological sci-fi

God, I only started this cause someone told me the sequel (written a couple of decades later) is good! I didn't expect this. He's describing the unicorn as having "lover's eyes" - can I even continue???

There's a fat guy in this book and Mary Gentle is NOT in the business of letting you forget that. He's also covered in food stains, because he's always eating. Every time he does anything she has to remind you how fat and covered with grease he is.

Despite this, I'm pretty invested, ngl. I thought it was going to be a straight fantasy but it's got elements of Weird Fiction and Steampunk - a cousin to Bas-Lag.

This is very well written, and if you're into politics I'm sure it's very gripping, but I'm a bit *exhales at length* about it, I don't know if I'll finish it. I'm ADHD as hell, I need a hook!

Sort of in the same line as a Memory Called Empire/ The Fifth Empire. No magic or space aliens so far, but they might just be running late and turn up later - I'll let you know.
