The incessant footnotes are seriously irritating, and I can’t tell if the reader is supposed to sympathize with Angie when she does thoughtless things. Hanging in for now because of the setting, but hmmm

The writing is so addictive but even more than book #1 the MMC is a paternalistic, misogynist ass. The way the author seems to condone a guy not taking no for an answer is super problematic.

Carrie is starting His Majesty's Dragon (Temeraire, #1)
Feeling the need for a deep dive into a gripping series, so I’m rereading book #1. Can’t recall how many I got through originally, but I like anything Novik writes so looking forward to the rewind.

Carrie is on page 28 of 304 of Most Delicious Poison: The Story of Nature's Toxins―From Spices to Vices
Initial impression is that I do not care about the personal background of the author and his purple prose recounting how toxins have been a part of his life. I'm hopeful that the rest of the book will have more substantive content that isn't filtered through the author's experiences.

I’ll read anything in this series, but I think she really should have combined this book and its companion, because too much is repetitive and there’s a lot of filler.

Maybe it would be more palatable with a different narrator, but I'm not sure I'm going to be able to stick this out. A shame, because I loved Heat, but the narrative comes across as disjointed, he seems completely oblivious to his gargantuan privilege, and at least at the beginning there's no acknowledgment whatsoever of non-Western cooking traditions.

Hoo boy. This has become a bit of a slog. I'm too far in to stop now, but there's only so much exposition a gal can take sometimes. Onward . . .

This is so hard to read but so important. It makes me shake with anger at the injustice that has been perpetrated for years, and feel sincere regret over the choices I made as a 1L not to pursue my dream of doing death penalty work in the South.

A must-read so far.

I really don't know why I'm continuing to read this Y/A novel. The writing is laughably expository and obvious, the characters exceedingly poorly drawn, and the setting incoherent. It must be that I can't get enough of "girl proves herself" plots. Ugh.

Giving up for now. Too Proustian for my taste, although I do like the sense of history that Oz imparts.

Having a hard time getting into this. If it weren't a book club book I'm not sure I'd persevere . . .

Carrie is reading Ender’s Game (Ender's Saga, #1)
Re-reading this in anticipation of the movie. The author's homophobia makes me ill, but damn if it isn't an excellent book. I borrowed this one so at least I'm not giving him any money . . .
