This is taking me a long time because it is so packed with information. Enjoying every bit of it, and truly would recommend for the pictures alone.

So far, I’m enjoying the world and alchemy a lot. I do feel like I’m reading a fanfiction (not a complaint obviously), especially when the side characters in the beginning feel like they have a clear counterpart from the source material. It is super dark and some passages I’ve had to skim through. Also making me want to rewatch Fullmetal Alchemist?

My reading habits lately are all soil science and Ignatian spirituality I guess.

Happened upon this while on a library errand and already feeling so excited. As a big nerd, gardener, and passionate home cook, this book ticks all the boxes for something I’m going to become obnoxious about. From the introduction, the focuses will be: environmental science, culinary craft and culture of food, and hope for a more sustainable future through action!!

Chapter 5 is about lobotomies and is, naturally, disturbing. As an environmental science nerd, I would argue that chapter 6 alone makes the entire book worth reading: The Rachel Carson chapter. Scientists aren’t to be deified, and science is always developing and evolving. It’s not dogmatic, but a process and a method. As Derek succinctly put it, “nature doesn’t give a f*** whether or not we understand it.”
