I’ve been neglecting this book for its dryness.

Confuses a dower with a “widow’s dowery” (not a thing).

Misidentifies “habiliments” as part of the dress and not the decorative edge of a hood and/or veil.

Fascinatingly, Jong chooses to utilize a poem that mentions Anactoria, scrub her name from it, and make it about her daughter and Alcaeus.

The book has now had two instances of the word “retarded.” I’m not offended as they are used in the literal, dictionary sense, not the slur, but puzzled as it’s such a modern way to describe the phenomenon of historical cognitive disabilities.
