The book is overall so good that the instances of fat-shaming are really, incredibly jarring.

I’m at the point where I actively dislike this book, but with only 42 more minutes to go, I feel like I should see this through to the end.

“You treat me like an equal,” she says to the man who has never, not once, ever treated her like a self-sufficient adult who can handle her own. (The best part being they have fought about this CONSTANTLY. I’m pretty sure that line about being treated like an equal was accidentally transferred from another book.) 😒

Oh now we’re going to throw shade at the mere idea of mental illness diagnosis? Are you fucking kidding me?

I’m torn between liking it and being 5,000,000,000% done with the “magic mistaken for mental illness and if you accept who you are you won’t need meds” trope. FUCK. THAT. SHIT.

The sequel isn’t quite so fun as the first book and I’m not sure why.

Possibly asexual/demisexual main character exploring her identity? This book keeps giving me everything I want.

I love love LOVE that labor organizers are a major part of this book/series, and there are definitely arguments about tactics within activist groups, but if the moral of the story isn’t “respect diversity of tactics,” I’m going to be very disappointed.

Well at least it’s acknowledging that one romantic relationship doesn’t necessarily negate an ace identity. I’m still a wee bit disappointed.

Okay but outing your girlfriend as a member of a persecuted group in front of a potentially hostile crowd without talking to her about it first isn't a noble gesture for a new king; it's a sign that he cares more about the symbolism than her feelings.

He's a creepy know-it-all; she's a neurotic mess constantly jumping to conclusions. Together, they reinforce stereotypical gender roles and problematic romantic narratives. Why I'm enjoying this, I have no idea.

This book would be 5,000,000,000% better if C.B. were a girl.

Going through this book very slowly, because parts of it are too real and painful to read.

So far the narrative arc is "oppressed girl learns that not all of the people oppressing her are pure evil." I suspect it's leading to "oppressed girl frees her people with the help of their oppressors." Perilously close to DNF territory.

One of the most heteronormative books I've read in awhile, but I'm liking it regardless.
