What a great addition to the series. I'm honestly on the edge of my seat.

These stories are bonkers. No wonder I've taken breaks while reading this.

Jen is finished with White Fragility: Why It's So Hard for White People to Talk About Racism
"Racism can still exist because it is highly adaptive."

Wait, can we study it like a virus? What would that look like? Could we "inoculate" against it? Treat it? Treat it like a medical condition?

Picking it back up because I need a break from fiction. I need something more grounded, yet not upsetting. This fits nicely and I'm enjoying it.

I'm enjoying this. I'm delighted with how the author emphasizes the humanity and kindness that can be exercised, even in the most adversarial times. War times are not usually portrayed in this manner. But if we look deep enough there are examples of it often enough.

There are oddities throughout - writing choices, character choices, and other things that just seem bizarre to me. I really want to enjoy the story but these things take me out of it.

I'm mesmerized by this tale. It's sad, and sweet, and meaningful, and somehow inspiring. This is really difficult to put down.

Might as well start preparing for the election discussions. Steven Hassan has made quite a name for himself regarding cults and mind control so this should be interesting.

"He was, as my guide had told me, a young man, between twenty and twenty-one years of age, with black hair and eyes, rather small, but admirably well made." - The Corsican Brothers, by Alexandre Dumas

I think I'm going to use that from now on, "between forty one and forty two years old". That is, if I remember. How much fun is that phrase? And actually more accurate. I love it!

I get that there's technical stuff in this story. It doesn't need to be presented like a textbook. Maybe we don't need all the teeny tiny details? Maybe we can learn them in a way that's not so dry? I'm done with this. I really wish I could know the rest of the story, but no. Done.
