When the narrator finally reveals the important fact of Rose's family (which many readers will know before beginning the book) she recognizes we may accuse her of being coy. She acknowledges we may resent the choices she's made. And then she explains her decision to withhold this information -- not for shock or as a plot device, but so that the reader will see her family truly the way she herself sees them.
