This book is so unserious.

This being told to the reader the way a new friend slowly unveils the particulars of their world is a stroke of genius.

Okay, now I hate this.

Shockingly, I don’t hate this.

Oh boy lol. Might I have made the gross miscalculation of reading two bad books in a row?!

I feel like I can tell how vivid this book was in Makkai’s head when she was writing it, but it’s just not translating well.

I had just begun to think, wait, isn’t this book about opioid addiction? And it was right then that the first dabble in pills came. Masterful.

I actually cannot believe how bad this book is.

This is actually a good tool for anyone in the creative realm.

Bored stiff.

Finally, a modern mystery with thriller aspects that’s not written like complete and utter shit.

Pride & Prejudice is an encouraged prerequisite before encountering this beast.

They weren’t kidding, this book is deeply precious.

I’m worried McCarthy relies too heavily on the intelligence of this character to build a story we might ooh and ahh at.

Better to be wide awake and fully sober for this one…

The writer used “lest” three times in two pages. But otherwise, the story is a delight.

So far so good.

These are some pretty terrible women, not gonna lie.

So far, what I will say is MAN is this dialogue unbelievable. Also, if I hadn’t been told the narrator was a man, I’d be certain he was a woman.

Dense. This book is DENSE.

Well, now I know how a boyfriend effects your reading schedule... still muscling through. Almost done.

This prose is to die for. The detail is immaculate. Like, my mouth is watering.

Loving it so far.

This is the first time in the series I've felt like the pictures didn't fit with the descriptions. The way he describes Devil's Acre reminds me of some post-apocalyptic, Gatsby factory land, but the pictures paint a scene of old London, nothing better or worse. Idk how to feel about this.

You know what I really like about Jacob? He's one of those humble heroes. Like, constantly plagued with anxiety, but still nobly pushing onward despite all the doubt pulling him back. He feels real. Like a next door neighbor.

I'm really loving this the second time around! The writing is beyond excellent and the vibe has a total Secret Garden feel.
