Though enjoying the novel I am sometimes confused by the main character, who seems to loose all her cleverness, when someone blackmails her on no grounds. It feels out of character somehow. Possible not out of the Victorian novel feel, where person’s status, job, etc, are so important they can’t deal with a conflict properly.
