Strange and random, Mr. Wind Up Bird, strange and random. I thought this book was strongest in the historical fiction parts set in the Japanese occupation of China and the coming of the Russians. The rest of it not so much. The magical realism felt forced and the details omitted. It's more like magical fetish than realism. It probably reads better when sitting in a dark well clutching a baseball bat.

I liked the imaginative premise, the world building, and the likable characters. It was a well written book. But that said, I found the moving, predatory city concept unbelievable in the long run. I know, it's more fantasy than science fiction, but still, if your going to invoke darwinism and a survival of the fittest concept, you need to stay true to that, and there's simply no evolutionary theory underpinning this.
