I listened to The Wake in audiobook form and I still hear Buccmaster's voice in my head, so compelling was the writing and reading. The beauty of an England of long ago is contrasted with the ugliness of war and invasion and the sheer hideousness of the protagonist's broken soul.
I recommend this book to those interested in FEELING history rather than just reading it, bad protagonists, and lovers of language.
