Hermann Hesse has done brilliantly with this book. He uses Siddhartha as a means of comprehending the teachings of Gotama (and hence the relevance of having the story built in the same time-period); but also explores an individualistic approach to the meaning of life, the purpose of our existence and the understanding of enlightenment.
