She’d never seen or smelled a dead body before, but there’s something in the human psyche that recognizes death like the chill of the wind carrying a storm.

In my head, I think I’m often telling Miri stories, logging away information or things I’ve seen in order to tell her about them later. Even trapped as I was down there, I was still doing this: taking everything in with one eye on how to recount it. I think I’ve trained myself to look at things this way, as if for her as well as me.

I remember the way that she looked at me, the open surge of her gaze, like something she’d invented, brought to life by powers of electricity and set down there, in the last of the light.
