I love this book.

This is the stuff. I've found a new favorite author.

The first half of this book dragged, and I found myself skipping dull sections about teenage angst and self-sufficient agriculture and sermons about nature trying to reach the parts that link the narrative to the main, overarching plot. We are finally there now, but I do wish we got here quicker.

I'm struggling to care about the main character. We get her back story in tedious detail about every petticoat and ribbon and employer, but she is a bit of a blank page in terms of her interior life. The way this book started, I thought we were going to get a deeper delve into her mental state and more of a poetic rendering of the MCs internal monologue, as we have in The Handmaid's Tale. Not so far...

It is very well written and there is a lot of research involved, but it is dull and slow and I confess I'm starting to skip passages. I'm not super intrigued by what quilts or chamber pots or dress fabric they had in 19th century Canada. I'm not sure I'm going to finish this unless we get a good inciting incident soon.
