One of the most beautiful books I've read in awhile. A wonderful amalgamation of cultures and magic, and I love that this fantasy story features people of color. Loving it so far!

Being fat is not a moral failure. It is not a requirement to live or be considered a person of value, and yet in traditional American culture it is all of those things. I seriously wish I could hug this woman and let her know what she has truly helped me see.

Similar in style to Nayyirah Waheed and Yrsa Daley-Ward, this magical woman shares profound words about the importance of loving one's self.

I already know I'm giving this one five stars. So many elements composed of rhetorical stream-of-consciousness. Even though the poems are set in first and second person narrative, it often feels as though I am more observer than reader. It gives a very different feel to what I normally expect. Also, I have a strong need to contact Gonzalez and see if she'll smoke a bowl with me. :)

Work and school have been keeping me stressed, but I never fail to find snatches of time to devour Key Ballah's words. This collection of heartfelt, revolutionary, healing poems is not, imho, as glorious as "Preparing My Daughter for Rain." But she always speaks her own truths, perhaps with fear - definitely and defiantly with courage. I look forward to more. :)

Oh man, I am in LOVE with the first story. And the second, about humans with physical objects as souls, is just wonderful. So far, much more satisfying than the last short story collection I attempted.

Hrmm... It's a good novel. It's not quite riveting at this point, but there's enough to keep me going to the end. We'll see.

"Maybe that is what beauty was, for humans. Accidents, imperfections, placed inside a pretty pattern."

This is the second book in a row that's reminded me how utterly beautiful and tragic it is to be human ("Version Control" by Dexter Palmer being the first).

"Reading is added to that great pile of things - work, love, sexual prowess, the words they didn't say when they really needed to say them - that they are bound to feel a bit dissatisfied about."

This guy knows how to capture the most...human moments. The ones we hesitate to share with others. Not the colossal moments that mark our lives but the emotions behind them, the small nuances that we act out every day, but never really speak of.

This book is seriously making me think about how science fiction and fantasy includes people of color.
