I've heard much of what's already been covered before in other books and through personal experience, but with the point I'm in my life and where we are culturally, this makes me want to go back to college and get a women's history degree while I still can.

Jack definitely experienced hardship but he sounds like a nightmare of a husband, save physical abuse.

So the executive branch has been abused for decades, it was just more clandestine (or opening admittedly, depending) in the past. And the America-as-good-guy thing isn't just something I failed to decode as a kid; it's what everyone is taught. Ugh.

Raise your hand if you were called a "Carpetbagger" by classmates after you were unwillingly moved to the former Confederacy as a child and it made you an even prouder Midwestern native. 🙋‍♀️

Of course Woodrow Wilson was an even worse person and President that I already knew (and I already knew he was a militant racist and nativist). Ugh

I had to pause reading to order the book so I can mark it up and take notes

I'm probably finding this more infuriating and devastating than I would have last year due to the destruction and violence of the current regime, but man the road that led the US here from the actions of people motivated by greed and courting people who think they're acting in the name of God. I had no idea Timothy McVeigh was radicalized after Waco because of right wing media. I'm so sick.
