This arc with Joe is so good. Lots of very sharp scenes around what is expected of a wife and of women in general, and ultimately how fragile men like Joe are. I was struck by the image of the shelf in Janie’s mind. And the observations on aging! So good!

I never got the chance to read this in high school. I am amazed at the amount of depth Zora Neale Hurston has managed to pack into the small amount of the story I've read so far. The survival story weaved into everything, set against the particular class struggles for Black women during this time period--it's heart-wrenching. I'm also particularly blown away by how much "showing" is done over "telling." Amazing work.

I love this response to Padilla, calling his letter "servile and indecent." Tell him, Pérez!

Things have really picked up now that she's in LA, but her insecurity has shot through the roof - or is it her willingness to communicate her insecurity that was there all along? In either case, Anna remains an amusing character, though her prattling can be a bit much at times.

Anna is such an interesting character to follow. Most smartphone-owning socially networked citizens of the Digital Age would have no problem relating to her.

Such a good piece to read in light of everything happening in the world right now. It's a quiet novel that is notable for its observations rather than its activity. Through the thoughts of Julius, we see how identity plays a huge role in how we see the world.

I'm loving this focus on the ability to be empowered while also acknowledging pain.

I'm really digging how bell hooks is building on each previous idea.

The romance aspect of this book is great because it isn't the main part - survival is. The "love triangle" serves as an obstacle to Katniss's overall mission. It's fascinating, seeing how she chooses to tackle the issue.

The more I read this, the more I feel the film adaptation really needs an R-rating to be effective.

I think one of the great things about Katniss is how she shows a decent understanding of her self-worth, despite all of the times she voices a sort of hatred for herself. Katniss carries on, and it's admirable.

I'm enjoying the exchange between Zooey and his mother. I know some find it exhausting, but there is so much depth to these characters. It's fascinating.
