I read several of this author's books around 20 years ago and loved them. This has been sitting on my bookshelf for a couple of years now and I can't put my finger on why I'm reluctant to start it.... The paperback edition I have has a very garish cover which is weirdly off-putting and the description on the back cover suggests its going to be too clever for its own good. But, never judge a book..... etc. Here goes!

Thought I must have read this years ago but have no memory of it - so either it was terrible or I'm in for a treat with an unread Sue Townsend! We'll see.....

Just finished the 1st book, Titus Groan.
Intense, dark & beautifully written. Not a book to skim, every sentence is crafted. I can't remember the last time I read a book like this - written for the sake of the story, the detail of the setting, building the atmosphere, developing the characters, telling the tales. Completely different from the modern 350 page bestseller - not sure it'd get published today. Fantastic!
