Another story that reminds me of the pharaoh in Genesis being visited by Abraham. There, Pharaoh is punished for acting on a lie when he didn't know better. Here, a "man of God" is killed by lions that God sends when he acts on a lie told to him by a stranger. The crime: eating bread and drinking water. The actual crime: simple disobedience. Stay in line, people. God loves you. But he'll kill you. Watch yourself.

Solomon offers a prayer about how good God is as he builds cities in his kingdom, which are built on the corpses of enemies that God want so good to. The overarching message of the Old Testament is written plainly: Obey, or else.

We gotta talk about the wisdom and judgment of Solomon in Chapter 3 sometime... Chapter 4 it's all lineage. Chapter 5 talks about peace in the land under Solomon's rule and a pact to build a temple between Solomon and Hiram. 6 and 7 describe that temple in back-half-of-Exodus levels of excruciating detail.

The first two chapters concern the succession of the throne following King David's death. Solomon and Adonijah duke it out politically at first, but naturally it leads to assassination. One of Adonijah's confidants, Shimei, is exiled, but gets murdered as punishment for leaving to the city of Gath to reclaim some servants.

The kid-naming scene was painful and impossible to relate to. People who relate to the bible are beyond me. They just have this endless discussion about it's significance and... It's just not significant, folks. It has no relevance to life or reality whatsoever. Give it up. Burn it. Stop thinking about the fucking bible.
