So Baxter sort of commits the error he calls out in the text, but from the opposite direction: rather than assuming that we're in the early days of the universe, he assumes that we're in the last fifth. If the universe is 14 billion years old, it's most likely to have a life expectancy of 25-30 billion years, not 17.5 billion years, as Baxter postulates.
