The writing is good but the plot line makes this a struggle. Heat isn't helping matters.

Well, Mr Brookmyre, might that opening be misdirection on who is on trial?

Right at the moment, this is making me a bit uncomfortable. I glanced up, and saw a smiling girl walk by. The contrast between that girl, with her future ahead of her and the title character is disturbing.

So Baxter sort of commits the error he calls out in the text, but from the opposite direction: rather than assuming that we're in the early days of the universe, he assumes that we're in the last fifth. If the universe is 14 billion years old, it's most likely to have a life expectancy of 25-30 billion years, not 17.5 billion years, as Baxter postulates.

Really? End of the Universes? Not a cosmologist, but not buying it. Feels wrong. And I still hate panspermia.

After reading nothing but fiction for the past month, I'm glad to get back to non-fiction.

Look! It's a gun on the mantlepiece. I wonder if she's going to use it?

Just finished Steven Popkes' "Sudden, Broken, and Unexpected". This is an excellent example of combining science fiction with the concerns of literary fiction. Far too often SF flees from what it can offer, apparently in an effort to stay in the ghetto fans perceive it to be in.

I'm in the middle of rereading Pat Cadigan's "The Girl-Thing Who Went Out for Sushi". Voice, characterization, plot-line all add up to a fine example of a modern science fiction short story.

Done with Star Surgeon. This is where the gender assumptions of the early 1960's stick out. That will change as time and the series progress, but still....

Done with Hospital Station. On to Star Surgeon. Interesting to compare how medical technology has left this series behind in the 40 years since it was originally published.

I've been remiss in not getting to this sooner. I've had it in my TBR pile for about 15 months. Will have to go and get the 2011 edition soon.

Really? They burst into flame? My WSOD is strained. The behavior of Darwin, Galton, et al. doesn't help.
