The author writes that members of the government drive through th village of Sarry on the way from Paris to Bordeaux. A quick glance at a map shows that this is ridiculous. This unlikely incident brings all the historical details into question for me.

I can’t figure out why I am still slogging through this stupid novel. I hate it. I can’t understand the hype.

I am hating this book. It’s a bad soap opera in print. It may be the first book I have abandoned in a very long time.

All my classic anxiety-induced nightmares are part of this novel’s plot: trying to catch up with someone who keeps slipping around the corner ahead, showing up at an event dressed inadequately and unprepared to give a speech, being in a theater only to find that everyone is doing everything except watching the movie.

I hope this goes someplace.

Before my friends think I have lost my marbles reading a mediocre pulp historical novel, I should let everyone know that my town (Newtown) is featured here, and the acknowledgment page is full of people I know. So I feel like I should read it. I am trying to remain positive.

I'm not sure I understand why everyone loves this book. Maybe I'm too cold-hearted and pragmatic; maybe I'm too far removed from my teenage self. At any rate, I'm finding it to be a bore.

good...but long.

I borrowed this electronically for the ipad, and I couldn't renew it. I'm waiting for it to become available again.

I'm already laughing out loud.
