The 'Monologues' in 'Selected Latwe Stories' are deceptively longer than they seem, given the deliberate absence of punctuation or indentation. Very different from the stories Bowles is famous for but beautifully eccentric and involving. The 'voices' of the Monologues are totally convincing.

Chapter 23 was quite humorous (intentionally?) after a more intense Ch. 22: 'I don't have a weak mind. I don't flip out; I travel in the astral body.' (Liked this.)

Chapter 21 probably the trippiest, most sustained so far, in which the main character and his friends trip in a forest.

At Your Service is one a very demanding read. I *think* it's about an elderly woman who has worked as a servant all her life and is asked to look after some dogs in a wealthy home filled with an assortment of gentlemen; later, she is asked to attend a funeral and pretend to be the deceased's mother. It's very whacky and eccentric. Not my favourite. Axolotl and The Night Face-up are still top.
