Courts is starting Occult Feminism: The Secret History of Women's Liberation
Just finished the introduction and when I say this is going to be the worst book I've ever read, I mean BY FAR.

This is clearly an uneducated and deeply ignorant author.

This is fascinating stuff. I knew nothing about the Catholic cult Opus Dei, never even really heard of it, so it's super interesting to see how closely its invention and evolution matches that of other religious cults, particularly Scientology.

I mean, it's the 5th book, it's more of the same. Though I'm finding the titular character much more annoying than I did the first time I read this, though I was a teenager.

So much more contemplative and cerebral than I expected it to be; there's a lot of focus on human emotions and feelings and on how the brutality of colonialism actually created so many racist myths.

Even though the tackiness of the rich is part of the fun and these books are always crass, I totally forgot that there's a horse that appears in one chapter named the n-word in this. Just a reminder at how acceptable it was to be openly racist in the 80s.

I'm slogging through but the author is such an obnoxious stereotype of a Gen X white man that it just grates

Though it's a strong 1st person POV, I think if this book was written in third person it would be classified as adult speculative.

I wish I felt worse about these ladies serial killing the men of Nagyrev, but it's hard to feel bad for women in a small Hungarian peasant town trying to take control over their own lives.
