Ergh I think I’m too picky but the story craft was juuuust non-existent.

Yeah, no.

Ok so they never once thought of like, polyjuicing to go to a public wizard if library, or just talk to some old people about things like the deathly hallows symbol or Gregorovitch or wandlore?

How about stealing a bit of food once and then increasing the amount? That’s apparently allowed.

Or putting the horcrux in Harry’s moleskin bag and storing it away?

The plot’s as holey as George.

This is the least elegant of the books, with time being very timey-wimey, Harry not being nearly bothered enough by Lavender, little barely hint hints coming up to foreshadow major mysteries, and, worst of all, the horrendous repeated metaphor of a creature in Harry’s chest to represent his attraction to Ginny. Gag me with a spoon.

Ugh…I can’t finish. I need slightly more creativity and nuance than this: “Most Fey Houses fell into one of two alliances. The Titherie was led by the House of Wayward Winds, while the House of Obsidian headed the banner of the Caidre. The two were… not on good terms.”


DNF for now.

Ok, the “functional” thing was cute.

Petition to ban the words “this” and “those” except in the context of dialogue. (I’m sure there are other exceptions, but you know what I’m talking about: “those eyes,” “this heat,” “those hands.” Bleh.)

I keep falling asleep after a paragraph or two. This book is so highly hyped I really hope it improves.

Oh, and the second conversation between FMC and MMC including an allusion to sex 100% negates the “slow burn” tag, imo. Grumble grumble.

Ok so these exams. Seem exceptionally basic for having had 5 years of training, amirite? I mean, Harry forgot the definition of a switching spell? Mixed up incantations for growth and color changing? Girl, please.

For the love of all that is holy can someone please give this kid a hug?

Definitely made more sense to make the portkey an object requiring super difficult and specific circumstances for Harry to touch.

But also, I don’t think portkeys automatically transport one back to their origination point so…Harry would have been SOL.

If BCJ put Harry’s name in, couldn’t any older student have submitted a younger student’s name to defeat the age line?

I can never get over the fact they don’t put Peter in size-changing bindings.

Strange they didn’t think to practice conjuring a Patronus without the immediate threat of a Dementor.

Also, Quidditch is a silly sport. I appreciate JKR clearly is as much of a sports fan as we’d imagine an HP fanfic writer to be and hence created the stupidest scoring system imaginable.

I need something, ANYTHING, to happen. The burn part is missing so far; it’s just slow.

I would never have known this was written by the same person as The Raven & the Reindeer.

I’m not yet sure why we care about Grace except that her name is in the title.

I’m not totally sure what the rest of the book will be about. It seems like we’ve hit the climax unless there’s a duel or something to come. (Clearly I have no memory from when I read it before.)

So did Quirrell burn his hand when he shook Harry’s in the Leaky Cauldron?

Everyone is terrible. They need to get out of the house(s) and meet some new friggin people.

Note: the boats on the lake that take first years from Hogsmeade Station to Hogwarts are notably underused in the rest of the series. Seems like they’d be an excellent enabler of tomfoolery. I guess JK just kind of “forgot” about them.

It’s cute or whatever but like 100 pages too long. I no longer care how it ends…blah

Miss Peregrine’s House for the Peculiar Antichrist stars an MC who can’t decide if he’s an immature, ignorant, fearful teenaged girl who is on her first assignment or a grumpy, jaded middle aged man who has actually been interacting with magical children for a couple decades. I’m…bemused so far.
