Am reading this because I love end-of-the-world survival stories but mostly as inspiration to tackle the invasive bittersweet vines trying to kill our trees. 👊

This book is an emotional dismemberment.

I love it so much.

As a reader, I am destroyed. As a writer, I am in awe.

"For a bird there are only two sorts of bird: their own sort, and those that are dangerous. No others exist. The rest are just harmless objects, like stones, or trees, or men when they are dead."

This book consists of journal entries from October 1 to April 4, so I'm rereading it one journal day at a time rather than all the way through at once. So far it's been a much better experience. I can savor the ingenious, breath-catching prose rather than rushing through in hopes of something different happening. At the heart of the book is the way the author changes in response to the landscape and the titular bird.

Really loving this and it's due back at the library today. 😭 Wish I could read faster.

Maybe by the time this *gestures at everything* is all over I will have read every pandemic/zombie/disaster novel in the English language, (and maybe a couple in French too!). I guess they make me realize how much worse things could be. 😉
