I ALSO had a companion dog at the same time, same name, Trixie, I thought I'd connect more in this story. Koontzs are extremely organized people with no previous experience with animals of any genre. He expounds with lavish anthropomorphism about their "daughter" Trixie. I had real children to keep me busy, so I'm afraid I'm a bit intolerant on that aspect. Still, I love all goldens and the story is wordy but nice.

As usual, the characters over complicate their actions and goals. This book has a tendency to drone on and on and you want to shake the characters and yell "Think!" I'm very interested in survivors of WWII and the camps, but this one is slow. I get the comment by the author "I like to think of Part One as the click-click-click" climb of a roller coaster (with important setups for later)" This is almost too slow.
