I heard about this book from the comments section of a NYT article I was reading about the standstill negotiations of the western states (and Mexico) for a new water agreement. (This is 2026 btw, some 40 years after this book was published.) Anyway, books I pick up in those circumstances usually don’t get finished, but from the beginning I haven’t been able to put this one down. Fascinating, great writing!

Fascinating, infuriating, enlightening, sobering: I’m not sure the world of today is as much like people say it is to the time period of this book, but it’s certainly not entirely different.

Book III was a slog. I'm sure it's me (and not Plato/Socrates), but I had to focus extra hard on Book III.

Slow going...

Chapter 4 on creativity and madness was fascinating!

Lots of good anecdotes. (Poor John McEnroe, she really gives it to him in this book.)

Okay, first time reading this in 15 years. I've got Bloom's translation alongside this one. Let's see how this goes!

Surprisingly heartwarming, considering we haven't met a human yet.
