I'm really enjoying this. I feel like Clara feels like a real human -- a woman with a modern view and voice, but not anachronistically so. She's surrounded by a world of artists and she makes sense in her time and place.

Crazy to be so close after listening to this for so long! It got a little dry in the middle but has definitely picked up again now. Has anyone checked on Valentine, though?? How long has it been since the Count knocked her out?

This was feeling a bit dry for a while but it’s picked up again. Also, I know Dantes literally had his entire youth stolen from him but there’s just something campy and petty about him being like “what?? these horses I bought were YOURS? what? my house is the house where two of you had an affair and then buried the resulting baby?? GASP!” lol I love it

I’m interested to see if my level of engagement with this book varies depending on the pigment I’m reading about — I feel a little distant from it right now and I can’t tell if it’s the material or the writing. I think the author has assumed a level of knowledge on my part about Aboriginal culture in Australia, and I don’t have that. A good starting point to learn more, but makes it hard to really dig into the book.

I’ve been *this* close to DNFing this for the last hundred pages or so. But I think I’m seeing the vision again.
Charlotte sure loves her cranky, brooding male authority figures, doesn’t she?
I feel like these characters are less likable than those in Jane Eyre, but yet more realistic people?? I think most of us who want to be Jane are really Lucy.

What's fun about the world of these books is that what I would normally accuse of being too coincedental actually makes perfect sense in the world of the Folk

You know the "guy looking back" meme? I'm the guy, Villette is the girlfriend, and this trilogy is the girl I'm looking back at

I'm so obsessed with Emily and Wendell being happy together. Give me a whole book of it.

Lucy Snowe being like "yeah I knew it was Graham for a while now but I just didn't want to say anything" is such a funny choice. I love her

Why am I just now realizing that these books take place in 1910?? I’ve been thinking it was the present day this whole time.

Struggling to get into this one (probably because I'm reading it in only 5 min spurts) but what strikes me about it is how modern both the narrative and the narratorial voice feel. Lucy feels like she could exist today.

I'm logging a guess now that Melissa is involved in this somehow -- for a few reasons: she's the only main character who isn't evidently linked to the events of the past, so what are we keeping her around for? I think she has some link we don't know; also, she has started behaving strangely
