A book that's taken me so long to read, someone thought I was starting it over from the beginning.

I have to be so for real: I don’t know what’s going on. I read The Idiot, I didn’t know what was going on. I got this from the library for reasons I can’t explain, and I still don’t really know what’s going on. It kind of feels like things are supposed to be jokes, but I’m not completely sure? I feel like there’s a disconnect in tone. And I am dumb.

This is such an interesting read but a painful one as well. This last portion…

I'm really enjoying this. I feel like Clara feels like a real human -- a woman with a modern view and voice, but not anachronistically so. She's surrounded by a world of artists and she makes sense in her time and place.

Crazy to be so close after listening to this for so long! It got a little dry in the middle but has definitely picked up again now. Has anyone checked on Valentine, though?? How long has it been since the Count knocked her out?

This was feeling a bit dry for a while but it’s picked up again. Also, I know Dantes literally had his entire youth stolen from him but there’s just something campy and petty about him being like “what?? these horses I bought were YOURS? what? my house is the house where two of you had an affair and then buried the resulting baby?? GASP!” lol I love it

I’m interested to see if my level of engagement with this book varies depending on the pigment I’m reading about — I feel a little distant from it right now and I can’t tell if it’s the material or the writing. I think the author has assumed a level of knowledge on my part about Aboriginal culture in Australia, and I don’t have that. A good starting point to learn more, but makes it hard to really dig into the book.
