Hailofeng chapter is just relentless with the hardships and deprivations Kim and his comrades went through, found myself wincing at the description of having to suppress a bad cough when trying to sneak through Kuomintang lines.

Really cool seeing Kim San really sharply analyze actions of the Japanese state you would think would become clear only much later, what he says about the post-March 1 administration cultivating a pro-Japanese rightist Korean bourgeoisie is echoed in Carter Eckert’s book on the subject.

Bruce Cumings was cooking nonstop in the fate of the committees chapter, really solid class and regional analysis going through each province one by one. All the quotes from Americans pretending they were doing less than they actually were in trying very hard to retain the Japanese systems of governance in the south are fun to read. Great job guys!
