Both of my daughters, aged 8 and 11, and I, very much enjoyed this book. Among its fine points is an intriguing and pleasantly unnerving balance of apparently superficial silliness and devastatingly passionate seriousness. The characters are caricatures but DiCamillo painted their quirkiness in a way that somehow made them feel to me like real people... some of them, people I know : )
