Dropped. This is _really_ badly written and edited.

I'm not quite sold on the "best writer of his generation," but there's a scene in part 9 that's unsettling in the extreme, and it's that artful use of the unsaid that really drives it home.

I just wish he 'unsaid' more. Near 700 pages in, and he's trodden some ground so thoroughly a plough would struggle to get through it.

Chapter Thirteen of Gormenghast might just be the best chapter ever written. I'm enjoying this much more than Titus Groan!

Titus Groan is a bloody ponderous affair. It feels like an exercise in writing without saying anything. The writing itself is sometimes beautiful, and the characters certainly have character, but the first book of the trilogy is a dull read.

Sometimes I really enjoy the narration. Other times I wish it would bloody hurry up.

What a sentence!

"The moon still hung aloft in the dawn, since the twentieth of the eighth month was past, lending no little pathos to the lightening sky, when in keen agreement with the feelings of His Excellency, whom he saw wandering in the darkness of a father's grief, Genji gazed sorrowfully upward and murmured,"

Wow. The descriptions of Benin City on the eve of colonialism gave me goosebumps.

This is fairly poorly reviewed, but I've loved the first three essays!

This is a good book. I'm not halfway through yet, but unless something goes very wrong, I'm comfortable predicting 5*s and a slew of recommendations. A collection of advice and experience from women in gaming that should serve as a challenge for everyone in tech.

Enjoying this so far, but the amount of "X knew they'd never see Y again" amateur prophesying is ticking me off.

Maybe that particular trick had an impact the first ten times I read it, but I've probably read variations on the theme a hundred times. Reading it four times in one third of a book just feels cheap. Twice it even ended a chapter.

It took until the 18th of 21 stories to find one that really gripped me. Thank goodness for Gaiman.

Reading this feels like a chore. I've read fourteen of the short stories, and enjoyed only two. I'm holding out for the lightning tree, but hoping something will pique my interest before then.

9 stories in and it's a slog. My Facebook update says it all:

"Someone remind me not to bother with anthologies again.

Every year I find at least one that seems like the best idea since sliced bread, but they're the literary equivalent of grinding for fifteen hours in a game you weren't even sure you liked anyway."
