Guidance from Emil Cioran: “instead of paying attention to the faces of people passing by, I watched their feet, and all these busy types were reduced to hurrying steps- toward what? And it was clear to me that our mission was to raise the test in search of a mystery strip of anything serious.”

Psych syndromes one can suffer from:

Detoxification Syndrome: pg 14 the insistence of one’s consciousness returning to certain, images or even the compulsive search for them. It is a variant of the Mean World 🌎 Syndrome where people have a particular type of infection where they spend hours in front of the TV searching for horrendous news.

The world in your head: standing there on the embankment, staring into the current, I realize that, in spite of all the risk involved a thing in motion will always be better than a thing at rest; that change will always be a noble thing than permanent that that which is static will degenerate and decay, turn to Ash, wow that witch is in motion is able to last for all eternity.” Pg 4

Here I am: “ my own presence is the only thing with a distant outline, now, and outline that quivers and underlays, and so doing, hurts. And all of a sudden, I know: there’s nothing for it now, here I am.”

Graft might be my favorite chapter. We get the beginning of the connections of Davis’ apple tree, and the Birds.

Chapter 3: values

‘The moral component of history, the most necessary component, is simply a single question passed over again: when it mattered, who sided with justice and who sided with power… one way or another everyone is forced to answer’

Chapter 2 title witness: Omar is asking the journalism world of the West: how can someone maintain the ethical double-jointness or the daily basement of modern political life? How does one maintain the façade and sleep at night while the journalist who bring the reality of the world to light our daily slaughtered and their western colleagues with no such fear accept this as a sad lot for journalist around the world

“… yet it marked a small parcel of rootedness in those years when the West transformed from a thing on film and TV to the place where, more likely than not, I’d live out the rest of my life…. I remember thinking: if this is all there is, it’s enough maybe you don’t ever shake off the Manning of your name or the dumb jokes about camels, but at least you go to the library and read whatever you choose.”

“ love is, perhaps, the sensation of expertise that erupts out of nowhere, and as time goes on accumulates enough soil at its feet to be standing on something.Louisa’s expertise, though, resisted this process. She understood Roman, which was better than knowing him….”
