For a book written by a man and published in 1920, this is very progressive. The narrator puts forth the notion that women can learn and understand anything (even running a business!), if only they were taught. The protagonist hopes for a life of her own choosing... one that doesn't involve spending her days cooking and cleaning for a husband.

Wow! This guy Lovelace is the absolute worst! What a jerk! His most trusted friend has already told him to let Clarissa go because she doesn’t deserve the fate Lovelace has planned for her, yet he’s obsessed with pressing his hand. He wants to thoroughly debase her just because he can. Times in 1748 weren’t much different from now for women, it seems.

When I added this book to my "100 Books To Read" list in 2019, I didn't know at the time that it is considered the longest book in the English language. Had I known, I wouldn't have started reading it. However, the story is pretty engaging, and I've actually bought both volumes so I don't have to keep turning it back in to the library and waiting for it to be available again.

Things sure haven't changed in the last 300 or so years, in regards to men and families trying to control women and getting mad when the woman doesn't want to be controlled.

So far, the main character has been introduced and each time she meets a new character or interacts with a repeat character, she has to explain everything that has occurred up to that point. Very tedious.

Holy moly! So much animal cruelty!
