Returned book to library. Decided I did not want to read

Did not finish as I had to get the book back to library. I do not think I will finish it. I’ve read a number of books by Toews and enjoyed them.

Oct. 15 - finishing the book

Although a big fan of Strout, I’m not enjoying it as much as I hoped. It is written at beginning of pandemic where New York is heavily hit by Covid. William, a scientist and Lucy’s ex-husband, decides it is safer to get out of NY city. They go to a small community in Maine. It is purposely a slow book with not much happening with all the social distancing and staying within your pod of people.

I’m enjoying this book by Emma Knight, a Canadian writer. Pen(elope) and her best friend Alice head to Edinburgh to University. Soon they befriend twins Jo(sephine) and Fergus. Pen’s father also studied at this university but has Ted has lost touch with his university friend Elliot, now a famous crime writer. Pen’s middle name is Elliot and she wants to find out more about Elliot Lennox.

So far, not sure if I will like (or even finish) this book. So far there have been so maybe characters it is hard to keep track. Hopefully the storyline will come together soon.

Enjoying book.

I did not finish this book. The poems were about grief and loss, which attracted me to the book in the first place. But a whole book of poems on that subject was too much. I can’t say these poems spoke to me which is what you want in poetry. Also the poems covered the pandemic.

I’m not sure about this one. I have to give it back to library, but I don’t know if I will finish it.

It’s the story of a young girl, who gets seriously injured during a prairie storm in Saskatchewan that also claims the life of her Mom. The story goes back and forth between the past during her long hospital stay and the present where she is a music teacher.

Interesting change of pace as Rebus is in jail….charged with the murder of one of his nemesis. Rebus is attempting to find out who murdered one of the inmates. Was it another inmate or one of the guards.

Quirky but interesting stories written by Tom Hanks — who knew he wrote! Published in 2017 - I wonder whether he will tackle a novel.

Interesting storyline in this age of driverless cars. Everybody’s worst nightmare. A computer virus that can make your driverless car attack rather than follow your instructions. We’ve already seen this where hackers can get into car systems, this just takes it to the highest level where the cars are seeming acting on their own.

Not sure yet. The story seems a bit predictable. Little poor girl inherits castle from a wealthy Grandfather she didn’t know about. Handsome rogue (cousin) thought he should have inherited property and now try to win her over…and may get castle if he can marry her (or trick her?).

I couldn’t get into the book, so took it back to library.

I’m really liking this book. It tackles a subject that is so prevalent these days - the devestation of forest fires. Mostly we hear the headlines as the fire are raging. But this story covers what happens after the fire and how people are coping. It is beautifully written.

This is # 7 in the Strike Cormorant detective series. Initially I wasn’t going to read this book because of its length — 945 pages, similar to #6 which was also 900 pages or so. I don’t like lengthy novels. But I have to admit that the stories are good.

The story is too brutal and I don’t like the torture.
