Ugh, it’s starting to get difficult to read this as the protagonist Lenu is making even worse choices, hurting others including her best friend Lila, and has become completely unlikeable. Was hoping she would grow out of it, but in this book which focuses on their adolescence, she has doubled down on her insecurities and treacheries. Such a shame as I fell in love with their world in the first book. 3 more to go!

It’s important to record oral histories of rapidly integrating and disappearing cultures. I appreciate that the author takes care to distinguish pre-colonial versions of stories versus imperialist versions that tend to reflect different mores than what seems to have been intended. For example, the legend of Kurupi in later colonialist versions makes the spirit out to be a rapist

Length novels of the same. His impressions of some of the dragons and reading of the prophecy is hilarious!
